Results do talking on GM canola - West Australia Farm Weekly


FARM WEEKLY REPORT THAT GENETICALLY modified (GM) canola has attracted its share of negative publicity during the Western Australian Supreme Court trial between Kojonup organic farmer Steve Marsh and GM canola-growing neighbour Michael Baxter.
They now reveal that developers of the Roundup Ready (RR) trait are hoping good results in National Variety Trials (NVTs) will attract an equal share of the headlines.
Tony May, technology development manager with Monsanto Australia, said the results from last year’s NVT work showed glyphosate tolerant canola varieties were standing up well against other herbicide tolerant options such as Clearfield and triazine tolerant (TT) varieties.
Nationally, at different 25 sites, RR varieties outyielded TT varieties by 7.58 per cent and Clearfield lines by 6.67pc according to Farm Weekly.
In terms of oil content, the RR varieties also did well.
Over 24 sites nationally RR varieties had on average a 1.08pc higher oil content compared to TT varieties and at 20 sites RR varieties had on average a 1.79pc higher oil content compared to Clearfield varieties.
Mr May said the results was a confirmation on what breeders were seeing in their own work.
“There is fierce competition in the RR breeding space, and each of the breeders are coming out with varieties,” he said...
