"A society that turns against its farmers has no future"

Bertrand Valiorgue: "For a very long time, French society has been rather indifferent to the fate of farmers. Their incomes, their lifestyles, their farming practices were not a subject of questioning. All this took place in a relative indifference with sometimes a form of contempt on the part of the urban society. But French society has evolved and is changing with respect to agriculture, and the way it is observing it. Many of our citizens now have a look, an opinion and sometimes very sharp judgments about farmers. Our fellow citizens express themselves more and more, and give definitive opinions, until the farmer is responsible for global warming, junk food, non-respect of animal welfare, extinction of biodiversity, soil depletion ... Over the years, the list of reproaches made to farmers is only getting longer. In a few years, we have thus gone from indifference to denigration. This is reflected and observed in behaviors that are marked by more and more symbolic and sometimes physical violence.

 The list of reproaches made
to farmers is only getting longer.
In a few years, we went
from indifference to denigration.
