Food Fight, between Paarlberg and Ronald
Oxford University Press Blog are featuring a Food Fight, between Paarlberg and Ronald.
Well a fight of sorts, in fact just a relatively civilized debate on the web between authors Robert Paarberg (Starved for Science) and Pamela C Ronald, who co-wrote Tomorrow's Table, both of which are great reads.
Both these new books make a welcome change from much of the current nonsense that circulates about agricultural biotechnology. They do this by presenting very readable scholarship on different aspects of the current global food innovation tragicomedy unfolding in the news-media. Strong kudos is due to Oxford books for realising how important this debate is.
Paarberg explains how anti-GM activism is stultifying much needed farming innovation in Africa. Ronald on the other hand with co-author Raoul Adamchak, an organic farmer explains in a conversational style how biotech and organic farming actually both need to learn from each other.
So go there to OUP Blog and check out the food fight:
Today we are proud to bring you Robert Paarlberg (who recently published Starved For Science) in conversation with Pamela Ronald (author of Tomorrow’s Table). These two experts will be debating how to best ensure a safe food supply with the least amount of damage to the environment. This is the first part of the series which we will be publishing all week, so be sure to come back and check out their exchange...
Update:

I've been similarly thinking how good a combination of organic and GM farming systems could be, from a physical inputs perspective. Why has organic farming taken the position to shun GM, when it could well be the most sustainable farming option. Certainly from an insecticide point of view, and who knows what in the future.
thanks for your excellent site, very informative
