Gene injections reduce Parkinson's symptoms

ABC News Australia 22 June 2007

New research shows that injecting genes directly into the brains of patients with Parkinson's disease can safely improve their symptoms.

A study published in the medical journal The Lancet found gene therapy helped 11 patients with Parkinson's disease.

Researcher Doctor Michael Kaplitt from Cornell University says patients reported substantial improvements in movement with the effects lasting as long as four years.

Previous attempts at gene therapy for Parkinson's disease have had mixed results.
