DJ are reporting from SAO PAULO - that Brazil's leading private sugarcane technology firm, CTC, is planning to begin field-testing three varieties of transgenic cane with high sucrose levels in coming weeks, after approval was granted last month by the country's biosafety commission.

William Burnquist, the technology director of the Center for Cane Technology, or CTC, was quoted "We're just waiting for these rains to stop so that we can go out into the field," adding that CTC's three varieties of genetically-modified cane, or GMO cane, have all been modified to exhibit sucrose levels that are 15% higher than the sucrose levels of ordinary sugarcane in laboratory conditions.
If the field-tests are successful, Brazil - the world's No. 1 sugar and ethanol exporter - could be well on its way to commercializing transgenic cane by the end of the decade.
